Commelina tuberosa is a perennial growing to 1m by 0.3 m with dazzling bright blue flowers during autumn. In needs full sun and well drained soil. It is a very hardy long-lived plant which increases steadily into a solid clump. blooms the first year from seed and has a succession of bright blue flowers emerging one per day from a clasped like sheath. Flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon.
Sow seeds in a light potting mix and cover with approximately 2mm of soil. Ideal germination is 15 to 20C with seeds usually germinating in 4 to 5 weeks. Prick the seedlings out into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and plant out in late spring or early summer after the last expected frosts.
