Dill - Anethum graveolens
One teaspoon of open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
Dill is a delicate-looking annual herb with frond-like leaves which have an agreeable, refreshing, anise-like flavour. Dill flavours mayonnaise, tartare sauces and salad dressings. Whole dill seeds have a similar anise flavour to the tips, but they are more robust and are added to pickles and chutneys.
However, I grow dill for its flowers, adding them to floral arrangements.
Direct sow seeds 1.5cm deep, with a spacing of 30cm in a sunny and sheltered position in spring. Soil needs to be well-draining and rich in organic matter. Dill can also be grown in pots. Dill is annual self seeding plant. I leave mine to happily self seed around the garden. This plant will attract beneficial insects to your garden.
