Disporum cantoniense 'Night Heron'
8 open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
This is one of the tallest forms with arching, bamboolike dark stems adorned with narrow leaves that emerge dark purple in spring and turn green with as the weather warms. Racemes of small, bell-shaped white flowers tinged in green emerge from the leaf axils in spring and develop into purple-black berries in late summer. Perennial growing up to 1.8m. This plant is for shade gardens. I have a few planted in my woodland gardens and my Gothic stumpery.
Sow seeds in autumn as they need exposure to the cold to germinate. Alternatively, place seeds in the fridge for 6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds in pots filled with good quality potting mix. Water and keep damp but not wet. Seeds will start to germinate in spring. Grow until the seedlings are around 10cm and plant out into the garden.
