Foxglove Mix - Digitalis purpurea & Digitalis x mertonensis 'Summer King'
1/8 teaspoon open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
No traditional cottage garden is complete without Foxgloves. The towering spikes covered in bell-like flowers add height and structure to the flower bed. This is a mixture of pink. purple and white flowering plants.
Also included in this mix are the seeds of Digitalis x mertonensis 'Summer King'. This hybrid perennial foxglove originated in 1926. A winning hybrid of pink D. purpurea and yellow D. grandiflora, 'Summer King' has ample spires of crushed strawberry red flowers, a neat, compact form, and handsome foliage.
These biennial plants grow to around 150cm, prefer well drained soil and will grow in full sun to part shade.
Foxgloves have a vase life of 5 to 10 days. Pick the spikes when half of the bell-like flowers are open. Condition spikes overnight in warm water. Wilted spikes can be revived by placing them in hot water after the spike has been recut. Remove spikes when they have revived.
It needs to be noted that Digitalis purpurea can become an environmental weed. Please do not grow these plants near environmentally protected areas eg National Parks. It is essential to deadhead these plants and do not allow them to set seeds. It is much better to purchase fresh seeds from seed farms to replenish these plants in your garden.
Seeds are sown direct or in pots during autumn. Germination takes around 20 days at 20C. Seedlings are transplanted at the start of spring.
