30 open pollinated seeds from our gardens.
Lunaria annua is biennial plant grows to 90cm which flowers in its second year. It is mainly known for its flat silvery seedpods that are used in dried arrangements. This plant is ideal for cottage gardens and for borders and will attract beneficial insects.
Sow seeds from Autumn to Spring either in pots or direct, covering with around 3mm of soil. Water gently and keep moist through germination period. Once the seedlings have grown to at least 5 cm, transplant seedlings into your prepared garden bed, ensuring the seedlings are well spaced – at least 50 cm apart. Water in well.
Flowers last between 5 to 7 days. Cut the long stems when the cluster of flowers are half open. To condition flowers, place in warm water overnight.
If you wish to use the dried seed pods, allow for these to develop on the plant. Harvest when the stems start to turn brown. Hang the seed pods until completely dry, this may take a couple of weeks. Each disc is comprised of three parts: a central parchment like disc which is covered on each side with a similar layer of parchment material. Sandwiched between these layers are the seeds. Gently removed the outer layer, leaving the central disc.
