Lychnis coronaria - Rose Campion

Lychnis coronaria - Rose Campion

Lychnis coronaria a short-lived perennial or biennial that has a rosette of silvery, felt like leaves that are attractive year-round.  In late spring, it will send up branched spires (height 60-75cm) bedecked with simple, brilliant cerise blooms. This drought tolerant plant and thrives in hot, dry beds with little moisture.

Dead heading regularly promotes more flowers, though leave some flowers on late in the season for self seeding. Prune at the end of the season and the trimmings can be added to the compost.

Did you know? That the felt like leaves were used as lamp wicks in the olden days? Well you do now. This is where the genus name Lychnis comes from, being Greek for lamp.
