Melianthus major - the ultimate statement plant!  This tough, drought-resistant plants comes from the southwestern Cape in South Africa.  It features dramatic, blue-green foliage that when crushed smells of peanut butter with showy large (up to 60cm in length) copper chains of fragrant blooms all summer.  The flowers are great for attracting bees and birds into the garden and look great when used in floral arrangements. This is a fuss free plant.  It can handle the heat and frost, grows in a large range of soil so long as they are well draining and tolerates full sun to light shade.  However, the secret to keep it looking good is maintenance.  Cut the stems back to around 7cm above the soil level just when the plants starts to grow in spring.  Ensure you cover the roots with a good layer of mulch during winter to protect the roots from frost.  Melianthus major is classed as both a perennial and a shrub growing to a height to 3m and 1.5m wide.

Seeds can be sown at any time of the year either direct into the garden or into pots.  However, germination does not occur until temperatures are around 15-20°C.  Sow seeds on the surface as they need light for germination.  Water well and keep damp but not wet.  Germination is irratic so be patient.
