These are easy to grow, long-lived perennials. Large, long-lasting star-shaped flowers emerge from balloon-like buds in summer and will occasionally repeat bloom in the autumn. Deadhead to prolong flowering. The leaves are thick, and green to blue-green in colour. They are lance-shaped with serrated margins. Balloon Flowers thrive in organically-rich, loamy soil that’s well-drained and moderately moist. They have fleshy taproots that are easily damaged if plants are disturbed. Grow plants in a sunny position as they need around six hours of sun light per day to flower.  Height around 50cm which means they are perfect for pots.

Sow the balloon flower seeds in the spring when all chance of frost has passed. Sow seeds in pots and gently press into soil but do not cover as the seeds need light to germinate. Water and keep damp but not wet. Germination takes around 21-30 days. Seedlings are fragile and must be handled with care.
