Purple Podded Peas (aka Capucinjer peas) - Pisum sativum
10 seeds of open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
This is an old heirloom variety of climbing peas from the 16th century. It is a very ornamental climbing pea that will reach a height of around 2 metres producing a huge crop of very sweet flavoured peas.
Its deep purple pods make it very easy to tell apart from the Sweet Pea pods which are toxic.
Sow in Autumn to Spring in a sunny position (in frosty regions do not so during winter). Note the soil needs to be around 10-20C, sow 15mm deep and 15cm apart, germination will take 10-14 days. Peas will be ready to harvest in approximately 72-74 days after sowing.
This is a very versatile pea, harvest as shelled peas or you use them as dried peas. Note these peas once dried can take a while to soften, soak overnight and simmer all day.
