There are about 200 species of annuals, perennials, and evergreen shrubs in this genus, which belongs to the pea-flower subfamily of the legume (Fabaceae) family. They occur naturally in the Americas, southern Europe, and northern Africa, and are usually found in dry habitats. With their tolerance of poor soil conditions, and propensity for spreading seed, they may need to be planted where their growth and spread can be controlled. Many species are grown for their ornamental flowers, and numerous hybrids have been raised, the best-known being the Russell lupins.
How to Grow Russell lupins
* Plant in full sun to semi-shade in a well drained site.
* Plants grow to 1m in height.
