Scabious-like creamy flowers with a subtle hint of palest yellow a top of long stems during summer. This plant is both majestic and understated adding height to the border without being overbearing. Use it as you would Verbena bonariensis planted at the back of a mixed or herbaceous border, or combine it with taller ornamental grasses in a prairie-style style setting. Scabiosa gigantea will grow in most soils but prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil, it can be grown in full sun or part shade. The flowers are an attractive nectar source for both bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, and are ideal for use as a cut flower.
Sow seeds in autumn to winter. Using a good quality potting mix carefully place the seed and gently cover with a fine layer of potting mix, seeds need light for germination. Seeds will germinate in 2 to 3 weeks at 18 - 21C. Once seedlings have reached a height of approximately 10cm, they can be planted out into the garden. Seeds can also be directly sown.
