Scabiosa japonica var. alpina 'Ritz Blue'
20 open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
Scabiosa japonica var. alpina 'Ritz Blue' - A neat low growing plant with blue flowers for the cottage garden, useful as edging or specimen planting. Long flowering. Grows to a height of 20cm. It is a perennial which is very easy to grow and very hardy once established (frost hardy). Bees and butterflies are attracted to the flowers making it an excellent plant to entice pollinators to your garden.
Flowers can be used in floral arrangements. Like most of these types of plants, cutting the flowers will encourage the plant to flower more.
Remove spent flower heads and trim back old foliage in late autumn. It will spread to cover a large area but it is easy to contain.
Sow seeds in spring, use a light potting mix and cover the seeds so they are just below the soil surface and water. When the seedlings are large enough to handle and have developed a couple sets of leaves, thin out and transplant into individual pots. Grow the plants on until they are approximately 10cm in height. At this stage the seedlings can be transplanted into the garden. Plants prefer fun sun, so ensure they are watered regularly whilst establishing.
