'Scarlett O’Hara' Morning Glory - Ipomoea nil
10 open pollinated seeds from our gardens for $4.00.
Scarlett O’Hara is an easy to grow annual vine producing an abundance of fuchsia red flowers about 9cm wide. They thrive in hot, sunny areas, though if part of the plant is in the shade, or the day is cool, the flowers will last longer.
In early Spring after the danger of frost has passed, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours then sow where they are to grow. Cover seeds with about 1 cm of soil and keep moist in bright light. Alternatively sow into 10-12cm pots and transplant after the true leaves appear and the danger of frost has passed. Germination takes about 7 – 10 days.
Plant where they can scramble over a trellis, arbour or fence, a minimum of 1.5 metre apart. They will grow 2.5 – 3 m in height. Scarlett O’Hara requires average water, but a good drink a couple of times a week is more beneficial than lots of light watering. Flowering commences about 12-14 weeks after sowing and continues for many months.
